OPENING NIGHT - INBOUND18
The body is not isolated parts but an activity of mind, physical processes, environment, personal relationships, social interactions and everything that we call experience.
Today we will talk about wellbeing. When people look at a person’s wellbeing it’s no longer enough to just look at the physical wellbeing of a person. Though physical wellbeing is still an important aspect, career, social, community, financial and spiritual wellbeing are all-important aspects into a persons wellness.
wellbeing
Let’s start with career
A successful business is made up of people who are fully engaged and passionate about their business. Through many surveys it is now known that only 20% of people in the US workplace are fully engaged in their work. 80% of people are either disengaged or actively disengaged. When a person is actively disengaged this means people are not only unhappy at work but go to work with the intent on making others unhappy (because misery loves company). This costs the American workplace 300 billion dollars a year (last revenue).
what makes for career wellbeing?
Career wellbeing happens when people can express their unique talents, purpose and strengths. When they are part of a team where everyone is expressing their unique talents and purpose, where everyone compliments their strengths, where there is a shared vision with some emotional connection and bonding. If you look at these characteristics of shared vision, complimenting strengths and emotional connection, these are actually what makes a good sports team. A good sports team will have all those elements and a great team in the workplace will have the same.
If your manager criticises you all of the time, you will become disengaged. If your boss or manager ignores you, you will become further disengaged.
When an Employer ignores their employees, employee disengagement rises to 45 %. If an employer criticizes but does not ignore, engagement actually improves and disengagement falls to 20%. Human beings would rather be criticized than ignored, criticism means you exist and your presence is acknowledged.
health improves. Interaction and good communication is basically the key to employee job engagement. When you have happy people working for you, who are content, healthy and engaged, then your customers are likely to be happy too. If your customers are happy then your investors are happy and your business will be successful.
Social & Emotional Engagement
If you have a happy friend / co-worker in the workplace, happiness will go up 15%. If your happy friend has a happy friend whom you don't know, happiness will go up another 10%. If your friends happy friend has a happy friend happiness continues to increase (seems contagious).
How does the happiness of others and people you don't know effect you?
We are all entangled with each other, when you are speaking with another person, all the people in your life are influencing your happiness. This is true for the other person too. Happy work environments are influenced by the people in your surroundings and their surroundings.
WHAT I LEARNED. . .
When employees are happy in the work place, they work better, are more likely to become long term employees and work harder to produce more accurate and quality work. One study found that across companies in Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For,” revenue increased by 22% on average over the course of a year when employees were content in their work place. By helping employees understand the meaning in their work through positive reinforcement or constructive criticism, employee engagement, business revenue operation accuracy and customer satisfaction increases.
how to implement
Employee recognition recommended by employees. Instead of higher management selecting one employee for accomplishments and indicating favoritism, recommendations can be made by employees and management for their co-workers in all departments. Make it fun, instead of the title employee of the month; choose something light like the The Dundies (Office reference). Make an incentive for employees to want to receive the award, small certificate for their desk, announcement, dollar reward.
I see X sitting at their desk late every night and putting in extra hours.
X went above and beyond for a customer that we may have lost if they had not done so
X implemented X that was beneficial to the company
Implement healthy competition amongst employees with the use of your companies core values. Every time an employee accomplishes a task using a core value, managers could hand out cards or log the task that is in line with a core value. The goal would be to have a stack of each core value at the end of each quarter. Drives the employee to enforce core values in day to day tasks with company recognition when successful.
